Re: Isle of Man TT
By the way - John McGuiness - now aged 50

today completed his 100th competitive TT race - finishing 5th in the Superbike race.

Think about it - all those racing/practise miles - 23 race victories - and the compare to all those alice banded, pastel boot wearing prima donnas on 150k per week.

Apologies - I'm having a Victor Meldrew moment.

Mum and Dad (God rest his soul) went every year to both the Manx and the TT, they absolutely loved it!

Like you say balls of fucking steel!

Thanks for that Youtube reference to John McGuiness. I find it fantastic to watch having raced at club level myself back in the 80's. Never anything like that sort of constant speed on public roads though.

McGuiness finished 5th this year at the age of 50. One lap is 37&3/4 miles and they do 6 laps. Average race long speeds are usually over 130mph.

All on closed public roads with the trees, buildings, walls and road markings. I'm not sure that it's balls of steel or plain lunacy.

Re: Isle of Man TT
I know the riders know the course like the back of their hand and ride it almost without thinking....

BUT...

Going through those villages at 150mph, they only need a blow out or a small bump on a stone or divot and they are a goner.

I literally do not know how they do it. It's scary enough watching, let alone riding it.

Willtell 3:29 Mon Jun 6
Re: Isle of Man TT
It's true that they do get over 150mph in some built up areas. They manage to get well over 200mph on the straights out in the country as well.

However,, it takes a lot more than "a small bump on a stone or divot..." to crash a motorcycle. And motorcycle tyres very rarely "blow out".

Your basic point is correct though. Crash into a wall, lamp post, telegraph pole, post box etc., you're toast. In over 100 years there have been 262 deaths there including 2 this year....

Re: Isle of Man TT
its really that split-second loss of concentration that is the undoing. When you do that at speed you are in a world of trouble.

Re: Isle of Man TT
Guy Martin does it and he's crashed, well the bloke is mental anyway :-)

well...I suppose I mean something the rider can't prepare for.

You see the Moto GP riders slide and they career into a nice 300 foot gravel trap. Isle of Man and the riders career into a stone wall.

Brutal.

When it all goes wrong.

A short clip of Conor Cummins losing it at The Verandah during the 2010 TT.

He lived to tell the tale thankfully ( there's a brief interview.)

The way he flies through the air like a rag doll is scary

Connor Cummings came 2nd in yesterday's Superstock at an over 130mph average race speed. That's 12 years on from that spectacular crash...

Crikey. Luckily he bounced over the stone wall. Probably what saved his life.

Amazing performance. And after the crash he had you wonder how the hell you do it again, let alone nearly win it. Made of different stuff those riders.

Davy Morgan was killed yesterday, his 80th race there.

It is truly hardcore and anyone that does it must have some bottle.

RIP Davy.

Its surprising in an age where people insist players take a knee to make sure everyone remembers its not OK to say mean things to people and when the government taxes and makes shops.move chocolate bars to make sure we don't eat too many to save us from ourselves, that this absolute madness is still allowed to happen. Long may it continue, these maniacs know what they're getting into must be an absolute rush. The footage scares the shit out of me just watching it.

Re: Isle of Man TT
Totally agree vexed.

I literally watch it through my fingers, what does my head in is that it is just an ordinary road.

Brutal but gripping.

Doing 130 mph a couple of feet away from massive brick walls, spectators and kerbs! Mad shit.
